Moto G6, G6 Plus, G6 Play Unveiled: Featuring 18:9 Displays and Android Oreo

Motorola announced the Moto G6 series at a Brazil event, months after comprehensive leaks. The new Moto G6 phones continue the G series legacy, offering three variants – Moto G6 Play, Moto G6, and Moto G6 Plus. All run Android 8.0 Oreo and include water repellent coating, a nice addition.

Moto G6 Plus

The higher-end Moto G6 Plus

The Moto G6 Plus boasts a 5.9-inch IPS panel with an 18:9 aspect ratio display in Full HD+ (1080p) resolution. Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 SoC clocked at 2.2GHz, it offers 4GB or 6GB RAM options alongside 64GB internal storage, expandable up to 128GB. The G6 Plus houses a 3200 mAh battery, which may warrant further assessment against competitors in its price range.

Overall, the Moto G6 Plus boasts an unassuming design, with little done by Motorola to differentiate it from previous models. Features like the curved 3D glass on the back enhance the phone’s handling. Face unlock is standard, alongside a front-mounted fingerprint scanner, typical of this year’s phones.

Regarding the camera, the Moto G6 Plus sports a 12MP+5MP dual rear camera equipped with Dual Autofocus Pixel technology, f/1.7 aperture, and a 1.4um pixel size on the larger 12MP sensor. This enables effects like bokeh and portrait mode. While the main camera supports 4K video recording, the 8MP front camera is limited to 1080p.

The Moto G6 Plus launches first in Brazil and Mexico, with India and other countries expected to follow in May or later. Pricing starts at 299 euros or approximately Rs 24,000, similar to the Moto X4.

Moto G6

Interestingly, neither the Moto G6 official page nor Motorola’s blog specifies the SoC. It is mentioned as a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset with an octa-core processor clocked at 1.8Ghz, likely the Snapdragon 450 SoC. All Moto G6 phones feature a water-repellent coating.

The Moto G6 boasts a 5.7-inch Full HD Max Vision display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. Like the Moto G6 Plus, it also sports a 3D glass back design. It is available in 3GB RAM and 32GB storage or 4GB RAM and 64GB storage options, with microSD card support.

The G6 features the same fingerprint scanner, face unlock, and rear cameras as the G6 Plus, but lacks 4K recording. Its battery is a 3000 mAh unit, with a Type-C USB port. Priced at $249, or around Rs 16,000, it will be available in most regions soon.

Moto G6 Play

Large battery and display define the Moto G6 Play.

Lastly, the low-end Moto G6 Play boasts a 5.7-inch HD+ resolution (720p) Max Vision display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. Notably, it houses a 4000 mAh battery.

Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 427 SoC clocked at 1.4GHz, it sports a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP selfie camera. It will be released in 2GB/3GB RAM and 16/32GB storage variants, expandable up to 128GB via microSD card. Starting at $199, or around Rs 13,000 in India, Motorola has slightly increased the price from last year’s model.
