Google Rebrands Bard to Gemini; Introduces Ultra 1.0 Model & Android App

Google Rebrands Bard to Gemini; Introduces Ultra 1.0 Model & Android App

Confirming earlier rumors, Google has rebranded Bard to Gemini. Following Bard’s integration with the Gemini Pro model last December, discussions emerged about a potential rebranding. Alongside this change, Google has introduced its most advanced model yet, the Ultra 1.0. Users can now access it through a subscription akin to ChatGPT Plus, named Gemini Advanced (previously anticipated as Bard Advanced). Let’s explore the latest developments in Gemini!

Bard is Now Gemini

Google asserts that all Bard tools and features remain available in Gemini. The user interface has been enhanced, featuring fewer distractions, improved legibility, and seamless navigation. This rebranding underscores Google’s dedication to providing access to top-tier AI models. Access remains free, with bard.google.com now redirecting to gemini.google.com.

Gemini is now accessible to Canadian users in English and French.

Despite Google’s rebranding efforts, the vision multimodal capability remains absent from the standard Gemini tier, a disappointment. However, access to the multimodal Gemini Pro model is available through the Gemini API, or with the new Gemini Advanced subscription.

Following the December 2023 announcement, Google now permits users to access the promising AI model, Gemini Ultra 1.0, via Gemini Advanced. To do so, one must subscribe to the paid Gemini Advanced plan, priced at $19.99 per month (Rs 1950 in India), with a generous two-month free trial offer from Google.

The Gemini Advanced plan includes a new Google One AI Premium subscription and 2TB of storage. Subscribe to Gemini Advanced here. Subscribers also gain instant access to other One perks, and Gemini will soon be available in Gmail, Docs, and other Google apps.

Gemini Ultra excels at highly complex tasks like logical reasoning, coding, and executing nuanced instructions. In numerous AI benchmark tests, Gemini Ultra outperforms OpenAI’s GPT-4 model, making it a formidable competitor.

Gemini Ultra currently supports image analysis via its text-and-vision model. Google plans to enhance Gemini Advanced with expanded multi-modal capabilities and improved coding features in the near future. Additionally, users will soon have the option to upload files and documents for analysis by Gemini Ultra.

In addition to the rebranding and launch of Gemini Ultra, Google has introduced the Gemini app for Android smartphones. The Gemini app is available for installation in the US and will be rolled out globally, excluding the UK, Switzerland, and EEA countries, in the coming days.

Currently, the Gemini app supports only English, with support for Japanese and Korean forthcoming. iPhone users can access Gemini via a dedicated tab in the Google app by updating to the latest version. Furthermore, Android users can designate Gemini as their default assistant instead of Google Assistant. A guide on how to do this will be provided shortly.
