We're Fully Acquainted with the Mate 30 Pro

The Huawei Mate 30 Pro, the latest flagship from the Chinese phone maker, is set to launch officially in Munich tomorrow. However, much like the Google Pixels, this device’s design has been widely circulated online, leaving little to the imagination.

Renowned tipster Evan Blass recently shared renders of the Mate 30 Pro, igniting a flood of subsequent leaks surrounding the device. These leaks included hands-on images and an unboxing video showcasing the black variant, as well as a header image confirming all available color options.

The biggest leak came today. The entire marketing brochure for Huawei’s flagship was uploaded on Weibo, detailing all the features of the Mate 30 Pro. This includes a waterfall screen with an 88-degree curve and a notch that will possibly house dual selfie-cameras and new Face ID technology for biometric unlocking.

There’s a physical power button on the right edge, along with virtual volume keys providing haptic feedback. Huawei has teased Air Gestures, possibly similar to gestures on the upcoming Pixel 4. We are still unsure of the screen resolution and screen-to-body ratio, but the device will be IP68 certified.

Beneath the surface, the newly launched Kirin 990 5G unquestionably dominates. Huawei has confirmed its reliance on this new chipset, built on the 7nm architecture, for the Mate 30 lineup. It promises abundant AI capabilities spanning software and camera functions. Expectations include configurations with up to 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

Talking about the circular quad-camera module, indeed, the leaks are true. The Huawei Mate 30 Pro features a circular camera setup comprising a 40MP Sony IMX600 RYYB primary sensor (SuperSensing camera) with OIS, a new 40MP movie camera (an ultra-wide-angle lens, as per the English translation of the leaked Chinese brochure), an 8MP telephoto camera, and a third TOF (Time of Flight) sensor. It also includes a Xenon flash and additional sensors positioned to the left of this circular module, which I quite appreciate.

Regarding camera features, the latest leak suggests that dual-40MP cameras will simplify capturing details in complex environments. The Mate 30 Pro enables shooting crisp 4K videos even in low-light conditions with its primary super-sensing camera. Without a periscope camera, it lacks 50x zoom capability, but still offers 30x zoom via the telephoto camera.

A notable highlight is the ability to capture 7680 fps (960×8) slow-motion videos, a feature that sounds impressive. We’re eager to see how it performs and its output quality. Additionally, the Mate 30 Pro allows users to shoot 4K time-lapses using the wide-angle movie camera.

Enough about the cameras, the Huawei Mate 30 Pro will run Android 10-based EMUI 10 out-of-the-box. The EMUI 10 update brings a minor visual overhaul, system-wide dark theme, and several new features. There’s a 4,500mAh battery, with 40W wired fast-charging and 27W wireless fast-charging support. Reverse wireless charging is also available.

Almost everything about Mate 30 Pro has leaked online ahead of tomorrow’s official launch. Huawei’s latest flagship offers gimmicky and nifty camera features. All that’s left is the price and availability details, so stay tuned for updates and return tomorrow at 5:30 PM IST for live coverage of the Mate 30 Pro event.
