‘Trust This Computer’ Alert Missing on iPhone? Here’s the Fix

‘Trust This Computer’ Alert Missing on iPhone? Here’s the Fix

When an iPhone or iPad connects to a computer for the first time, a popup asks users to trust the computer. Trusting allows syncing, accessing photos, contacts, and creating backups. In my experience, trust settings usually work, except for rare hiccups. Unfortunately, some iDevice users reported the “Trust This Computer” alert not appearing on their iPhone, preventing syncing. If you’re facing this issue, here’s how to fix it:

How do we fix this problem? Let’s break it down.

The Solution

First, we’ll try a simple yet effective solution. If that fails, we’ll reboot the trust setting, which usually does the job. If that doesn’t work, we have other reliable hacks. So, no need to worry. Let’s start troubleshooting.

1. Force Restart Your Device

A hard reset has often fixed the “Trust This Computer” popup not appearing problem for me. I’ll rely on this troubleshooter again.

First, disconnect your device from the computer, then force restart it.

  • On iPhone/iPad with Face ID: Press and release the volume up button, then the volume down button. Finally, hold down the side button for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears.
  • On iPhone/iPad with Touch ID: Hold down the Home and sleep/wake buttons simultaneously for about 10 seconds to force restart your device.

After restarting your device, reconnect it to the computer. Enter the passcode to unlock it, then wait a few seconds for the “Trust This Computer” message to appear. If it shows up, you’re good to proceed; if not, try other solutions.

2. Reset Trust Settings

To resolve this issue, consider resetting the trust setting. This action, found within “Reset Location & Privacy settings,” effectively restores trust settings to factory default.

Access the Settings app -> General -> Reset -> Reset Location & Privacy. Enter your passcode and select Reset Settings. Then, attempt to connect your device to a computer to determine success.

3. Reset Network Settings

If the above two solutions fail, consider resetting the network settings. This action removes all existing Wi-Fi networks, passwords, VPN and APN settings, as well as cellular configurations. While radical, it often effectively resolves the issue.

To proceed, navigate to Settings app -> General -> Reset. Then, select Reset Network Settings and confirm.

  • If you’ve downloaded iTunes for Windows from the Microsoft Store, ensure that iTunes Mobile Device Helper is enabled as a startup item.
  • Click the Start button, then select Settings, and choose Apps. Ensure iTunes Mobile Device Helper is enabled.

4. Update Your Mac/iTunes for Windows

If the problem persists, outdated macOS or iTunes versions may be the cause. Using old software often leads to various issues. Therefore, updating the software is essential.

To update your Mac: Click the Apple menu at the top left of the screen, then select System Preferences. Navigate to Software Update and follow the steps to upgrade to the latest macOS version.

Update iTunes from Microsoft Store: iTunes from the Microsoft Store updates automatically with new versions. You can also manually check for updates in the Microsoft Store.

Update iTunes from Apple’s website: Open iTunes, go to the Help menu, and select Check for Updates. Follow the usual process to update iTunes.
