Total Number of Planets in Starfield

Let’s address the elephant in the room – how many planets are there in Starfield? Naturally, most people will wonder, as Starfield emphasizes planet and space exploration. During the deep dive, it was confirmed that Starfield will feature over 1,000 planets for players to discover. This includes a mix of procedurally-generated and hand-crafted planets.

The 1000 planets will span 100 star systems, each with unique characteristics like weather, species, and more. While not every planet will support bases, we can still explore them for mineable materials or life forms. Additionally, many planets will feature hand-crafted areas to explore.

Habitable Planets in Starfield

Not every planet in our observable universe is habitable, a fact evident without extensive scientific knowledge. Similarly, Starfield doesn’t render every planet habitable. However, you can explore them for materials. Todd Howard, the Game Director of Starfield, addressed this on the Kinda Funny podcast, stating that only 10% of the 1000 planets are habitable.

Engage in a little arithmetic and don your Scott Steiner glasses (for those in the know), and you’ll find approximately 100 habitable planets in the game. Yet, according to Howard, the other planets aren’t devoid of value. As noted earlier, players can still traverse them for mining resources or to encounter crafted scenarios. So, for those enthusiastic about exploration, there’s ample variety.

Starfield Planets of Note

At the Starfield Direct deep dive, a few habitable planets were confirmed. Four of these planets house settled colonies in the Starfield universe. The first is Jemison, in the Alpha Centauri Star System, with New Atlantis as its capital. On Mars, there’s a mining colony named Cydonia, which is another major colony with the largest mining facility under the United Colonies.

Outside of the United Colonies, an independent star system coalition exists. Akila City resides within the Freestar Collective space, situated in the Cheyenne Star System. Taking inspiration from various spaghetti western settings, this settlement embodies the essence of the Wild West. It’s also where you might encounter one of your Starfield companions. Finally, there’s Neon in the Volii Star System, also part of the Freestar collective. Initially a fishing settlement, it evolved into a pleasure city, attracting both astute individuals and space ruffians. Neon thrives as a hub for nightlife and those with questionable motives.

Confirmed during the Starfield Direct, numerous unclaimed planets, including hostile territories like Red Mile in the Porrima System, await exploration beyond these four.
