It’s common to buy an app from the App Store only to discover it doesn’t work as expected. This is especially true when testing beta versions of Apple’s operating systems like iOS 10. Regardless of the cause, paying for non-functional apps is frustrating.
Unlike the Google Play Store, the App Store doesn’t offer a straightforward refund process. However, there’s a method for requesting refunds from Apple, which we’ll explain below:
Using iTunes on Mac/PC
The simplest way to request a refund from Apple is through iTunes.
1. Launch iTunes on your Mac or PC and go to Account -> View My Account.
2. Scroll down to the “Purchases” section, and click on “See All”.
3. In the page that opens, scroll to the bottom, and click on “Report a Problem“.
4. Click the “Report a Problem” link next to the app you want refunded.
- This will take you to an Apple website where you can report the problem and apply for a refund.
5. Fill up the details, and click “Submit”. If Apple finds your issue eligible for a refund, you’ll receive an email confirming your refund is being processed.
Using a Browser
The process to apply for a refund can be initiated from the browser, without launching iTunes. Many people prefer this method because it avoids the nuisance of launching iTunes, especially on a PC.
1. Launch your browser and go to reportaproblem.apple.com
- Locate the purchase you would like refunded, and click on the “ReportaProblem” button next to it.
3. Fill up the details, and click “Submit”. If your issue is found eligible for a refund by Apple, you will receive an email confirming your refund is being processed.
Note: You may be contacted by Apple Support, asking you for the reason for the refund. In my case, I was not contacted asking for any explanation.
Refunding Accidental Purchases
Why Apple makes it challenging to obtain refunds for App Store purchases remains a mystery. However, they have implemented a responsive system. If an app fails to deliver as promised or malfunctions, Apple promptly addresses customer reports, resolving refund claims within 5-7 days.
Next time you buy an app only to discover it doesn’t fulfill its claims or isn’t compatible with your device, don’t fret over lost funds. Report the issue to Apple, and they’ll handle the rest. Share your App Store purchase and refund experiences with us in the comments below.
