Understanding DRM Protection
DRM, Digital Rights Management, restricts how media bought from certain vendors can be used. Apple employs DRM for all content from the iTunes Store, including music, books, movies, and TV shows. Ostensibly, this is to deter piracy and ensure only the purchaser can access the content. However, it also limits playback to Apple devices. This restriction is unjust; consumers should have full control over content they’ve paid for.
The DRM debacle surfaces here. Stripping DRM from purchased media grants freedom. No longer confined to specific devices like iPhone, iPad, or Mac; access extends to Windows computers and Android devices.

Integration with iTunes is a standout feature of this program. If iTunes is already open when you launch M4VGear, it will prompt you to relaunch iTunes. Then, the software automatically selects Movies and TV Shows purchases and rentals from your iTunes library. Search functionality is available for large libraries. Alternatively, you can drag and drop files from iTunes for conversion into M4VGear, emphasizing its user-friendly design.
It’s important to understand that M4VGear is specifically tailored for iTunes media. Attempting to convert other file types using this program will not yield results.
M4VGear Conversion Presets
M4VGear, like other modern conversion utilities, provides various conversion presets tailored for specific platforms or devices. These presets cover a wide range, including Apple products such as iPhones, iPads, iPod Nanos, iPod touches, as well as Mac software like iDVD and Final Cut Pro. Additionally, there are presets for popular Android devices, gaming consoles, general smartphones (including Windows Phone), and more. With numerous presets available, you’re likely to find one suitable for playing the converted media files.
If, for any reason, you desire only an audio version of your iTunes TV shows and movies, the last tab in presets offers various options such as MP3, FLAC, WAV, etc. Additionally, there are several customization presets available, including those for custom MP4 output settings if none of the presets meets your requirements.
M4VGear Conversion Performance
Regarding the actual media conversion process, it couldn’t be simpler. Simply select files from your iTunes library, choose the preset, and conversion begins instantly. You also have the option to open the destination folder once the conversion is complete or shut down your Mac afterward.
Conversion speed matched most other similar software, possibly exceeding some, though benchmarking this rigorously proves challenging. Nonetheless, a 40-minute TV episode converted to DRM-free output in just over two minutes, which is acceptable in any scenario. The output quality equals that of iTunes, making it difficult to discern differences when comparing both videos simultaneously. Remarkably, this is achieved with one-pass encoding, as there’s no option for two-passes.
M4VGear preserves subtitles and closed captioning (CC) from source media, provided they’re supported. Additionally, enabling the option produces output with hardcoded subtitles, contingent on the availability of subtitles or CC in the source file.
M4VGear offers preferences solely for selecting the storage location of converted files and whether to overwrite existing ones.

M4VGear efficiently removes DRM from iTunes Movies and TV Shows without significant drawbacks. While it fulfills its promises, expanding its capabilities to include DRM removal from iTunes Music and Books would be an enhancement. Despite this, testing this tool was a positive experience, making it worth trying if you aim to access your iTunes purchased movies and TV shows on non-Apple platforms.
