Despite Minecraft’s evolving landscape, certain elements remain steadfast. Among these enduring features is bedrock, a cornerstone of the game’s foundation. This unyielding block serves a crucial role in terrain generation, preventing players from plummeting into the void below. While obtaining bedrock as an item in survival mode is unfeasible and disruptive to gameplay balance, the desire to break it persists among players. Thus, let’s delve into the methods of breaking bedrock within the realm of this beloved blocky universe.
Understanding Bedrock:
Distinct from the Bedrock edition of the game, the bedrock block stands as the strongest in-game block, situated at the bottom of your Minecraft world. Bedrock covers the entire roof of the Nether dimension, being both unobtainable and unbreakable by any tool or effect, including the most powerful explosions like those from end crystals, owing to its high blast resistance.
Preparations to Break Bedrock
- 2 TNT Blocks
- 1 Obsidian Block
- 2 Pistons
- 1 Lever
- 1 Wooden Trapdoor
- Any other block such as Cobblestone
Note: Although these are the minimum resources required, bring extras of every listed item due to the glitch in breaking bedrock, which may not work perfectly every time. Additional obsidian, flint & steel will help you make another Nether portal if needed.
1. TNT Blocks
To craft a TNT block, gather 5 gunpowder and 4 sand. Refer to our TNT crafting guide for more details.
2. Lever
To create a lever, gather one cobblestone block and a wooden stick. Arrange them in your inventory’s grid or on the crafting table.
3. Trapdoors
To craft trapdoors, gather six identical wooden planks. Fill two adjacent rows in the crafting area with these planks to create the trapdoor. This recipe yields two trapdoors.
Piston
For a piston, collect 4 cobblestone blocks, 3 wooden planks, 1 iron ingot, and Redstone dust. Consult our Minecraft ore distribution guide for locating iron and redstone easily.
To craft, position the iron ingot centrally in the crafting area, with the redstone dust directly below it. Then, place wooden planks in the top row. Fill the remaining spaces on either side of the center column with cobblestone blocks. That’s all!
Obsidian
To mine obsidian in Minecraft, you only require a diamond pickaxe. Refer to our comprehensive guide for assistance.
Minecraft: Breaking Bedrock
To begin, ensure you have the necessary items at your disposal to reach the bedrock layer.
Step 1: Reaching Bedrock
- Create a Nether portal and enter the Nether dimension. Our guide can expedite this process. Bring along wooden ladders and ender pearls for this journey.
- To enter the Nether, build a pillar upwards until you reach the bedrock layer at Y=127. Ensure there are no blocks between you and the topmost part of the bedrock layer. Use the F3 key to open the debug screen and locate the targeted block’s coordinates.
- On the right, a section named ‘targeted block‘ will display the coordinates of the block you’re viewing. If the Y coordinate for the bedrock block is 127, that’s the one you need. Remember its coordinates for later.
- Once you’ve found the spot, place your ladders leading to the bedrock block. Ensure there’s enough space for you to stand and climb the ladder.
- Finally, climb the ladder, hold the forward movement key upon reaching the top, and aim towards the bedrock block to throw your ender pearl. You should glitch through the blocks and end up on the Nether roof.
Step 2: Start Breaking Bedrock
- Choose the bedrock block with saved coordinates, the one you entered the Nether roof from and without bedrock blocks beneath it. Selecting this block makes connecting the normal Nether and the Nether roof easier. Then, place a piston over it facing upwards.
- Next, place a TNT block on top of the piston’s face and an obsidian block on one of its sides.
Step 1: Stack Blocks
Begin by stacking blocks to initiate the process. Start with an obsidian block as the base. Next, place another block, preferably cobblestone, on top of the obsidian. Then, position a TNT block atop the cobblestone.
Step 2: Set Up Trap Door and Lever
To complete the setup, affix a trap door to the upper half of the obsidian block. Following this, attach the lever to the block situated above the obsidian. Now, our setup is primed for action, as illustrated below.
Step 3: Exploit Piston’s Obsidian Glitch
Now that our setup is prepared, it’s time to breach Bedrock. The objective is to synchronize the activation of TNT and the piston. Once the TNT demolishes the piston, swiftly replace it with another piston capable of exploiting the obsidian glitch. Additionally, ensure you equip armor to protect against TNT explosions, which are otherwise lethal.
- To proceed swiftly, start by holding a piston, then pull the lever next to the obsidian block.
- Activating the TNT blocks gives you only 3 seconds. Use this time to open the trapdoor and enter the swimming position.
- Position yourself under the trapdoor and aim at the top corner of the obsidian block. Spam the secondary action key while holding the piston.
If everything goes according to plan, the piston will face upwards, causing the bedrock block beneath it to be destroyed. Repeat this process until successful. This method relies solely on the piston glitching away the bedrock. When activated, a piston can displace any block, except bedrock. Our goal is to activate a piston atop a bedrock block. This activation hinges on timing.Upon lever activation, the previously placed piston triggers with two TNT blocks. When the TNT destroys the piston, another piston is swiftly placed facing downwards. Utilizing swimming mode and facing upwards facilitates piston placement.
If replacement is fast enough, the game treats both pistons equally and activates the new piston displacing our bedrock block. This machine can have various redstone variations, but the core principle remains unchanged.
Whether to access the void or build atop the Nether roof, you now know how to break bedrock in Minecraft. Keep in mind, though, you can’t collect the broken bedrock block, but you can replace it with any other block. Feel free to share any alternative methods to break bedrock in the comments.
Frequently Asked Questions
How to Place the Second Piston Quickly?
If you can’t quickly press the default secondary key (usually the right-click key), bind that action to another key on your keyboard. Then, when necessary, hold that key to place the second piston automatically.
Piston Placed, But Bedrock Didn’t Break. How to Fix?
For most players, this method may not work initially. Repeat it several times until the timing is right. An upwards-facing second piston usually indicates success.
How to Avoid TNT Damage in Minecraft?
In survival mode, wearing enchanted armor can prevent TNT damage. Alternatively, craft a Potion of Healing to avoid death.
