Considering the laptop’s design, it’s nearly perfect. You get a nano-bezel display, paired with a slim profile, weighing just 1.7 kgs. Port locations are excellent, everything is well laid out. The only disappointment is the plastic build. Don’t misunderstand, the brushed-metal finish looks premium, but doesn’t feel that way. However, there’s a silver lining, as there’s minimal flex to the body. Moreover, unlike other brushed-metal devices, this isn’t a fingerprint magnet.
The Asus VivoBook S510UN’s design is pleasing — neat, clean, simple, and super portable, akin to a plastic HP Spectre but at a fraction of the cost.
Connectivity
In today’s connected tech world, laptop connectivity is crucial. Fortunately, the Asus VivoBook S510UN offers comprehensive options.
On the left side, there are 2 USB 2.0 ports and an SD-Card Reader.
On the right side, you’ll find the DC charging port, a USB 3.0 port, an HDMI port, a USB 3.1 Type-C port, and a 3.5mm audio jack.
Considering everything, Asus offers all you’d expect from a laptop, and more. In 2018, using a Type-C port for charging would have been better, but I’m still satisfied with Asus’ port selection. The laptop excels in connectivity and should satisfy every user.

Remarkably, the nano-bezels contribute to the laptop’s sleek appearance. The ASUS VivoBook S15 squeezes a 15.6 Full HD display into a standard 14-inch laptop frame, achieving an impressive 80% screen-to-body ratio. Personally, I recommend this laptop solely for its remarkable display quality.
Keyboard
The Asus VivoBook S510UN boasts a superb keyboard, delivering a delightful user experience, albeit leaving me wanting more overall. First, the positives:
Featuring a white backlight, the keyboard exudes a premium aesthetic. Notably, its layout and feel mirror those of the previous generation Apple MacBook Air. The sturdy, single-piece construction and 1.4mm key travel ensure ergonomic and comfortable typing.
However, not everything’s perfect with this keyboard. Firstly, there’s no LED notification on the Caps Lock button, which is quite baffling. Secondly, I really wish for a full-sized keyboard with a numpad. The spacing between the keys feels excessive, resulting in a sense of wasted space.
Nevertheless, typing on this keyboard is effortless, and although adjusting to the layout takes time, it’s not a complete deal-breaker.
Touchpad
Windows devices’ touchpads have significantly improved, thanks to Precision Drivers on Windows 10. Fortunately, the Asus VivoBook S510UN utilizes this technology, providing an enhanced touchpad experience. The touchpad has decent structure and supports multi-finger gestures. The VivoBook’s touchpad rivals those of Macbooks.
Furthermore, a fingerprint sensor is located in the top-right corner of the touchpad, utilizing the Windows Hello feature. Unlike other systems that include hardware without much thought, the sensor on the VivoBook S510UN is excellent.
Audio
This laptop disappoints greatly in the audio department. The branding of “SonicMaster” atop the device proves to be meaningless.
Speaker placement is another let-down. Placed awkwardly at the bottom, they muffle most of the sound. Even at full volume, using the laptop on your lap renders the sound barely audible.
Not only is the placement poor, but the sound from the speakers is mediocre at best. The sound levels lack balance, and it seems Asus merely included these speakers for basic Windows notification sounds. The audio quality is a significant letdown, particularly considering the laptop’s other positive features.
Asus’ Bundled Software/Bloatware
Many companies include OEM software with their devices, and Asus is no exception. However, what distinguishes them is that some of their bundled software is actually beneficial. For example, the power management feature enables users to configure battery charging levels to maximize shelf life. Additionally, Smart Audio allows users to adjust levels for better audio performance through the 3.5mm jack.
Overall, Asus’ software is generally good. Although it may still be considered bloatware, as it occupies unnecessary space, I appreciate the company for including limited yet useful features, rather than overloading it with unnecessary components.
Performance
The Asus VivoBook S510UN performs phenomenally. Packing the latest 8th-gen Intel CPUs, up to 16GB of RAM, and an MX150 discrete GPU, this super-portable laptop handles tasks effortlessly. The onboard SSD enhances its already swift performance.
Reviewing the i7 variant sent for testing, I anticipate similar performance from the i5 variant. Daily tasks, including web browsing, Photoshop image editing, and gaming, are handled adeptly. Despite the MX150 not being touted as a gaming GPU, it maintains 110 FPS on Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and an impressive 42 FPS on PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.
The device’s performance impresses me, offering excellent capabilities and portability at this price point, with few competitors matching its level.
Thermals
For a laptop with such powerful hardware, thermal management is crucial. Keeping your laptop cool ensures optimal performance. Fortunately, I encountered no issues in this regard with the Asus VivoBook S510UN. The placement of components is optimal, and despite having only a single fan, it functions flawlessly.
During my usage, I observed no throttling, with temperatures consistently at 42 degrees Celsius. Even during demanding tasks like gaming or video editing, temperatures peaked at just 65 degrees Celsius, which is commendable. The laptop incorporates Asus’ IceCool technology, delivering exceptional computing performance and a pleasant user experience.
Battery Life
Battery life concerns many, especially those considering portable devices. Asus claims 8 hours, but in my use, I achieved 6 hours, even with average performance, on a balanced profile. While using battery saving mode might match Asus’ claims, I prioritize performance.
