Sony unveiled its new Xperia smartphones in an online event today. The devices, including the Xperia 1 III (Xperia 1 Mark 3) and Xperia 5 III (Xperia 5 Mark 3), maintain similar designs to their predecessors and boast flagship-grade specs to match competitors’ performance. Additionally, Sony introduced a budget-centric Xperia 10 III smartphone.

Before discussing prices and availability, let’s review the specs of the new Xperia smartphones.

Sony Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III Unveiled

The Sony Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III share similar specifications, differing primarily in screen size and camera configurations.

Display

The Xperia 1 III boasts a larger 6.5-inch 4K OLED panel with a 21:9 aspect ratio, while the Xperia 5 III features a slightly smaller 6.1-inch Full HD+ OLED display, also with a 21:9 aspect ratio. Both screens offer a smooth 120Hz refresh rate and responsive 240Hz touch sampling rate, with no intrusive notches or punch holes.

Minimal bezels at the top and bottom accommodate front-facing stereo speakers, which deliver immersive sound with support for Hi-Res Audio, 360 Reality Audio, and 360 Spatial Sound.

Internals

Under the hood, both the Xperia 1 III and the Xperia 5 III run on the flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 chipset. The former boasts 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of internal storage, while the latter has 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Both include external microSD card slots for expanding storage by up to 1TB.

Cameras

Regarding the cameras, both models sport a triple-camera setup featuring a 12MP f/1.7 primary sensor, a 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide lens, and a leaked 12MP periscope lens with a variable focal length equivalent to 70-105mm lenses. Additionally, there’s an 8MP selfie camera in the top bezel.

While the camera setup is similar in both devices, one significant difference stands out: the Xperia 1 III features a 3D ToF (Time-of-Flight) sensor for enhanced AR experiences.

Battery and Highlights

Both devices pack a 4,500mAh battery with wireless charging and 30W fast charging support.

They also boast an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance, 5G support, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and more.

The Xperia 1 III offers two color variants – Frosted Black and Frosted Purple. The Xperia 5 III offers three – Black, Green, and Pink. Both run Android 11 out-of-the-box.

Xperia 10 III

With the Xperia 1 III and Xperia 5 III, Sony also introduced its budget-friendly Xperia 10 III smartphone, featuring a 6-inch Full-HD+ OLED 21:9 HDR display, Snapdragon 690 SoC, 4,500mAh battery, and triple-camera setup comprising a 12MP primary lens, 8MP ultra-wide lens, and 8MP telephoto lens (sans periscope camera).
