Minecraft offers various vines and crops. Regular vines thrive in swamp and jungle biomes, while unique red weeping and blue twisting vines inhabit the Nether dimension. Additionally, cave vines grow underground in the Overworld. Among these, cave vines stand out for their exceptional produce: glow berries. This guide focuses on locating, harvesting, and cultivating glow berries in your Minecraft world.
Acquiring Glow Berries
Step 1: Locating Cave Vines
Cave vines yield glow berries. Begin by locating them, typically found in the lush cave biome of Minecraft, identifiable by the presence of azalea trees above ground.
Once you’ve found an azalea tree, start digging downwards until you enter the lush cave. These caves feature floors covered in moss blocks and are dotted with pools of water, where axolotls can be found.
The cave vines hang from the ceiling, extending downwards. When you spot one and ensure no hostile mobs are nearby, proceed to harvest the glow berries.
Step 2: Harvesting Glow Berries
To harvest glow berries, find a cave vine bearing them. They’ll resemble other cave vines but will have orange-colored glowing fruits. Pillar up if they’re high.
Then, either right-click or break the vine. Vines with glow berries drop 1 glow berry. If the vine has no berries, it drops nothing. Repeat to gather more glow berries for your Minecraft house or base.
Growing Glow Berries in Minecraft
- Place a block or blocks slightly above the ground.
- Select glow berries from your hotbar and right-click the underside of the blocks.
- Cave vines will start to appear. You cannot obtain the “cave vine” item itself but use glow berries instead to plant them.
- As you place the cave vines, you will notice they don’t have glow berries at first. You’ll need to wait for the berries to grow, which can take a while depending on the random tick speed.
Glow berries grow only on newly generated cave vines. If you already have a cave vine that grew from the block you attached it to all the way to the ground and still lacks berries, it will not grow any. The vines have about a 1 in 9 chance of bearing berries. If the entire length of the vine is berry-less, you can break most of it and wait for a glow berry to grow.
Cave vines can grow up to 26 blocks, depending on their age. Checking the debug screen in Minecraft Java edition with the F3 key reveals the age value of the last cave vine.
Once the age value reaches 25, growth stops. Each newly grown vine adds one to its age randomly. Consequently, cave vines vary in length, with some being very short and others very long. However, despite reaching a length of 26 blocks on average, they often yield less than three glow berries, making them inefficient.
To obtain a larger quantity of glow berries efficiently, use bone meal. Simply have bone meal on your hot bar and right-click any cave vine to instantly harvest the glow berries.
If you start spamming the right-click button, you can grow and harvest glow berries in Minecraft quickly, but it will require a lot of bone meal.
Now you know how to find, harvest, and grow glow berries in Minecraft. If you’re interested in their top uses, check out our dedicated guide. Don’t waste any more time; start growing glow berries right away.
Why won’t my glow berries grow?
Glow berries grow only from the last-generated cave vine. To make glow berries appear on specific vines, use bone meal on that vine to grow the berry manually.
Can glow berries grow in the light?
Glow berries can grow in any light level, so you don’t need to worry about using artificial light sources in Minecraft for their growth.
