Axolotls, introduced in the Minecraft 1.17 update, bring life to its waters. Despite their charm, they pose a threat to sea life due to their hostile nature. However, with the release of Minecraft 1.18, Axolotls have become scarce, almost hidden within the game. Unless you know where to look, finding them can be a challenge. Fortunately, we’ve curated a list of effective methods to locate Axolotls in Minecraft. Let’s dive in!
Locating Axolotls in Minecraft (2022)
These methods work on both Minecraft Java and Bedrock editions. Our guide is divided into sections for your ease, and you can use the table below to explore them conveniently. Sit back, take notes, and discover where to find Axolotls in Minecraft.
Axolotls in Minecraft
Axolotls are semi-hostile aquatic mobs that thrive in both land and water, akin to frogs. They are passive towards players and refrain from attacking them. However, they exhibit hostility towards most aquatic mobs, excluding frogs, dolphins, turtles, and other axolotls.
Each Axolotl attack inflicts 4 health points of damage. Before delving into their locations, let’s examine the variants of this mob present in the game.
Types of Axolotls
Axolotls in Minecraft come in five variations, distinguishable only by color. Despite their visual differences, all types share the same abilities and health. Notably, blue Axolotls have less than a 1% chance of spawning during breeding.
Axolotl Spawn Biomes in Minecraft
In Minecraft 1.17 and subsequent updates, Axolotls predominantly spawn in warm ocean biomes. However, capturing, breeding, and locating them in such environments can be challenging. Fortunately, with the release of Minecraft 1.18, the necessity for a Potion of Water Breathing is no longer required.
In Minecraft 1.18 and later, Axolotls spawn solely in the lush caves biome. These caves, introduced in the Caves & Cliffs Part 2 update, are plant-based and distinct from other Minecraft cave biomes. Finding Axolotls in these caves isn’t particularly difficult if you know where to look.
Finding Lush Caves
Finding Axolotls in Minecraft requires locating lush caves in your world. These temperate cave biomes spawn in the overworld and are often encountered while exploring cave openings and underground tunnels. Alternatively, you can search for their signs above ground, as lush caves typically appear beneath azalea trees, which grow in the airspace above these caves, even submerged.
While there isn’t a specific above-ground biome associated with lush caves, players have commonly found them in jungle and forest biomes. If this seems too challenging, you can utilize one of our recommended Minecraft lush cave seeds. Additionally, our guide provides coordinates to these caves for easy teleportation within Minecraft.
Finding Axolotls in Lush Caves
According to the Minecraft Wiki, Axolotls spawn 100% in lush caves if they’re large enough. However, in the Bedrock edition, they only have about a 10% spawn rate, but typically appear in groups of 4-6 mobs in both editions. With sufficient effort and a lush cave, locating Axolotls in Minecraft is only a matter of time.
To find them, search for water at least two blocks deep. Even if an Axolotl isn’t in the water, it usually stays within 6-8 blocks of it. So, carefully inspect the area in and around the water source. Sooner or later, you’ll come across a group of Axolotls.
Discovering Axolotls in Minecraft
Now, ready to find and breed Axolotls in Minecraft. These creatures are a great addition to your builds on your online Minecraft server. Keep them saturated in a water tank; they can survive on land but not for more than 5 minutes. Familiar with them already? It’s time to meet Allay in Minecraft. This mob is the wild update’s response to the Axolotls. Unlike Axolotls, they are not hostile and are useful in Minecraft automatic farms.
Axolotls are still fun to be around, especially when used to hunt hostile mobs underwater. You need the best Trident enchantments and an Axolotl by your side to rule Minecraft’s oceans. If that’s not your plan, what do you plan on doing with Axolotls? Tell us in the comments!
