Virtual Reality devices gain prominence, with big companies launching VR devices. While Samsung’s Gear VR, Oculus Rift, Sony Playstation VR, and HTC Vive gain fame, Google Cardboard is affordable and easily available. We’re new to virtual reality, so it’s not a surprise that we aren’t well acquainted with Google Cardboard and its working. Since Google will unveil a new VR headset soon, knowing everything about Google Cardboard is essential. Here’s what you need to know:
What is Google Cardboard?
Google Cardboard is a virtual and augmented reality platform that transforms your smartphone into a VR device with an affordable price tag. It utilizes low-cost components and a folded cardboard viewer, hence the name. The device includes a compartment for your Android smartphone or iPhone, allowing you to view content through lenses and access compatible apps for various virtual reality experiences. The lenses deliver a 3D image with a wide field of view, immersing you in the interface.
Features:
- Foldable cardboard viewer
- Two 45 mm plastic lenses
- Hook and Loop fastener for head-straps
- Rubber bands
- Magnet or capacitive tape for smartphone interaction
- Optional NFC tag
Where to Buy?
The Google Cardboard reference design features cardboard construction, but various third-party viewers offer premium designs. We recommend purchasing from Google’s Get Cardboard page, which lists available third-party options. Prices range from $17 to $50.
You can also build your own Google Cardboard device. Download the Google Cardboard manufacturer’s kit, which includes instructions and necessary materials.
Getting Started: Setting Up
Setting up a brand new Google Cardboard requires an Android smartphone running Android 4.1 or higher, or an iPhone. To experience virtual reality, download a Cardboard compatible VR app. We recommend starting with the official Google Cardboard app on the Play Store or iTunes.
Upon opening the app, scan the QR code on your Google Cardboard to check compatibility and calibrate the lens type for your smartphone. Once completed, the app will split your display into two parts. Insert your Android smartphone or iPhone into the Google Cardboard compartment and secure it to your face.
Note: If your Android smartphone has NFC support, Google Cardboard’s NFC tag detects it when the smartphone is inserted, automatically launching the Google Cardboard app. To disable this feature, simply turn off NFC on your smartphone.
Operating Google Cardboard
Once you mount Google Cardboard with the Cardboard app open, you’ll access various demos. The iPhone app offers tutorials, exploration, exhibits, urban hikes, kaleidoscopes, and welcome videos. In contrast, the Android version includes Cardboard demos, a 360 Video Channel, Cardboard Camera for 360-degree photos, and a VR game. You’ll also find a “Get Apps” section for VR-compatible apps and support for Google Street VR to explore landmarks. Unlike the iPhone version, the Android app offers unique demos such as Earth, Tour Guide, My Videos, Exhibit, and Photo Sphere.
For effective operation of Google Cardboard, remember:
- Move your head to navigate.
- Select options by aiming and pressing the left-side magnet button.
- To access the main menu, tilt the Cardboard 90 degrees to your right.
Beginner Tips
If you’ve just acquired a Google Cardboard viewer, consider these tips:
1. VR Photo Capture and Viewing
Utilize the Cardboard Camera app to capture VR-friendly panoramic photos with depth and sound. Relive those moments in VR.
2. Explore Street View in VR
Google’s Street View app integrates with Google Cardboard, allowing you to explore world-famous landmarks effortlessly. Select a landmark, tap the Cardboard icon, and enter VR mode. The app splits the display, enabling you to immerse yourself in the landmarks through your smartphone and Cardboard viewer.
3. Bluetooth Controller
While many games support Google Cardboard VR, relying solely on motion sensors can cause discomfort. Additionally, some games aren’t suited for the magnet button. Serious about VR gaming? Invest in a Bluetooth controller. Ensure your Google Cardboard head-straps are secure for hands-free use.
4. Battery Conservation
Playing VR games or watching VR content can drain your smartphone’s battery, so conserve battery by putting your phone in Airplane mode. Download VR content beforehand to view offline.
5. Position your phone correctly
Place your smartphone correctly in the Google Cardboard viewer for the magnetic button to work. Ensure the phone’s head is toward the left of the Cardboard holder.
6. Opt for a Swivel Chair
Avoid using Google Cardboard in public to prevent accidents. At home, use a swivel chair for easier VR experiences, as it facilitates movement.
Compatible Devices
Not all Android smartphones support the Google Cardboard app. Only phones with a magnetometer or compass sensor are compatible, as the device uses a magnet as a button. Check if your phone has a magnetometer before use.
Ready for Google Cardboard VR?
Google Cardboard offers affordable VR experiences. Despite fewer apps, they are entertaining. Beware of motion sickness with prolonged use. Share your Cardboard experience in the comments!
