Ryzen 7000 Mobile Processors Debut on Laptops

AMD introduced Ryzen 7000 series mobile processors for laptops, but not all are based on Zen 4. Some use Zen 3 and Zen 2 architectures. Let’s discuss AMD’s new naming scheme.

To identify the architecture, check the 3rd digit. Zen 4 processors are labeled as 7940, Zen 3 as 7735, and Zen 2 as 7020. Additionally, AMD launched a 7045 variant denoting raw performance. These processors have a higher TDP and offer better performance than the regular 7040 variants.

Ryzen 7045HX Series Mobile Processors

Regarding AMD’s laptop APUs unveiled at CES 2023, the standout is the 7045HX series (code named Dragon Range) manufactured on a 5nm process node. The flagship 16-core Ryzen 9 7945HX mobile processor features 32 threads and a TDP of 55-75 Watts. It operates between 2.2GHz and 5.4GHz with an 80MB cache. Having such a processor in a laptop is extraordinary.

AMD aims to surpass Intel’s i9-13980HX mobile processor, boasting 24 cores. Notably, while Intel allocates 16 cores to efficiency, AMD dedicates all 16 cores to performance, a remarkable feat. Effectively, this mirrors a desktop CPU, akin to the Ryzen 9 7950X, albeit with a lower TDP. Additional processors in this series include the Ryzen 9 7845HX (12C/24T), Ryzen 7 7745HX (8C/16T), and Ryzen 5 7645HX (6C/12T). Integrated graphics feature 2 Computer Cores based on RDNA 2.

Gaming and content creation laptops will integrate processors from this series. Expected models include the Alienware m16 and m18, alongside Asus ROG Strix and Lenovo Legion gaming laptops. The arrival of laptops equipped with these Ryzen processors is anticipated in February.

Ryzen 7040HS Series Mobile Processors

The Ryzen 7040HS mobile processors, revealed at CES 2023, offer a compelling blend of performance, efficiency, and features. Utilizing Zen 4 architecture and a 4nm process node, this series includes three models: Ryzen 9 7940HS (8C/16T), Ryzen 7 7840HS (8C/16T), and Ryzen 5 7640HS (6C/12T).

With a TDP ranging from 35 to 40, these processors boast a total cache of 24MB, except for the 7640HS variant, which features a 22MB cache. Notably, each processor in this series is equipped with an AI engine. On the graphics side, there are 12 RDNA 3-based Compute Units, ensuring exceptional performance. Expect the Ryzen 7040 series laptops to debut in March this year.
