Let’s face it, many of us crafted quirky Gmail usernames in our youth, which later linger as we enter the professional realm. Over time, these email IDs often lie dormant, inundating us with unnecessary notifications. Whether due to neglect or suspicion of unauthorized access, deleting these unused Gmail accounts becomes essential.
Should you suspect foul play or simply desire to streamline your online presence, this guide offers a straightforward approach to deleting a Gmail account promptly. It presents two distinct methods for achieving this goal. Let’s delve into the process.
Deleting Gmail Without Impacting Your Google Account
To delete your Gmail service without removing your associated Google Account entirely, follow these steps:
Delete Gmail Account on Android & iOS
- Open the Gmail app on your Android or iOS device. If you have multiple Gmail addresses, ensure you’re using the one you want to delete. Tap your profile icon at the top right corner.
- Choose Google Account or Manage your Google Account.
- Swipe left to access the Data and Privacy panel in Google Account settings.
- Tap Data from apps and services under “Your data and privacy options”.
- Scroll down and tap Delete a Google service under “Download or delete your data”.
- Scroll down on the next screen and tap Continue. Then, confirm your identity with your device passkey.
- Locate Gmail from the list of Google services and tap the delete icon beside it.
Deleting Gmail Account on PC
- A window will appear prompting you to enter a non-Gmail email address. You can set one up quickly using Zoho or Yahoo.
- After completing the setup, input the new non-Gmail email address in the text box on the confirmation window. Then, click Send verification email.
- Check your inbox on Zoho, Yahoo, or your chosen email service. Locate the Gmail service deletion verification email, open it, and click the attached link to delete your Gmail service.
Deleting Gmail Account on PC
- Visit Gmail.com in your preferred web browser on a PC, and select the profile icon at the top right corner.
- Choose Manage your Google Account from the drop-down menu.
- You’ll reach your Google account settings. Here, select the Data & privacy section.
- Click on Data from apps and services you use.
- Scroll down and choose Delete a Google service.
- On the Google services list page, select the delete icon next to Gmail.
- Enter your non-Gmail email, click Send verification email, then follow the link in the verification email to delete Gmail.
What Happens When You Delete Gmail
- Regaining access may be possible, but no timeframe has been specified. Thus, no guarantee exists.
- You can no longer send or receive mail with this Gmail address.
- No one can use your Gmail account in the future.
- Only the Gmail service will be deleted, not the entire associated Google account. Therefore, your other Google Account data remains untouched, including Google Play purchases.
Deleting Your Google Account (Android & iOS)
If you wish to delete the entire Google account associated with your Gmail address, you can do so via your phone or PC. Here’s how:
- To delete an email address from your Gmail app on Android or iOS, go to the profile icon at the top right corner of your screen.
- Choose the email address you want to delete from the list.
- Tap on either Google Account or Manage your Google Account.
- Swipe left to access the Data and privacy panel.
- Tap More options and then Delete your Google Account.
- Confirm by selecting Continue and using your passkey or fingerprint sensor.
- Once finished, you’ll reach the Delete your Google Account page.
- Scroll down, confirm by checking the two checkboxes at the bottom, and then tap Delete account.
Note: Before deleting, you’ll find the option to Download your data via Google Takeout at the top of the Delete your Google Account page. If you have important data associated with this account, use this option to download and save it.
Delete Google Account on PC
- Sign in to your Gmail account using a web browser.
- Click your Gmail account icon at the top-right corner.
Manage your Google Account, and you will be redirected to your Gmail account settings.
- From the left panel, click on Data & Privacy. Scroll down to find the More options panel or click on More options under Your data and privacy options at the top.
- Click on Delete your Google Account from the More options section. Then, follow the steps showcased for the mobile app.
What Happens When You Delete Your Google Account
- You will lose all data from Google services associated with that account, including Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google Drive.
- If you’ve subscribed to external services like YouTube Premium, purchased apps on Google Play, rented a movie on Google Movies & TV, or bought a book from Google Books, you’ll lose access to all of these Google-backed data and services.
- You won’t lose access to Netflix, Disney+, or any other non-Google service you’ve linked to your Google account. However, if you forget your password for these services, you can’t reset it because the Google account associated doesn’t exist anymore.
After deleting your account, Google allows you to recover it. According to this Google support page, the deletion process takes about 2 months to complete.
There’s up to a 1-month recovery window for your Gmail account. If you regret your decision, log back in promptly to restore it.
If your Gmail account remains unused for 2 years, Google may delete it.
Deleting one Gmail account won’t affect your other accounts unless you choose to delete them manually.
To permanently delete your Gmail account, go to Google Account settings, then to Data & Privacy, More options, and choose Delete your Google Account.
